Former Marathon Director Discusses Disagreements Within Bungie During Game Development
Ziegler left Bungie in July 2026, several months after the release.
Former Marathon game director Joe Ziegler revealed that during the development of the shooter, there were serious disagreements within Bungie regarding the project's direction. According to him, one of the main tasks after joining the team was to form a common vision for the game.
In a new interview, Ziegler explained that he came to Bungie thanks to former colleagues from Pandemic Studios, where he worked on The Saboteur. Together with former Bungie executive Justin Truman, he initially worked on another unannounced project. Later, the studio needed help with Marathon, and Ziegler joined the development as a consultant.
In March 2024, he was offered to lead the project after Christopher Barrett stepped down as game director.
When you join a project that is already in development, it's important to get everyone together and figure out what we are trying to achieve. Sometimes the team has a unified understanding of the goals, and sometimes the ideas about the future of the game differ greatly. There were quite a few disagreements in Marathon.
According to him, the developers had their own ideas about which direction to move in. Therefore, he had to help the team align goals and determine how to achieve them. Ziegler believes that without a common understanding of further development, it was difficult to effectively continue working on the game.
At the same time, the former head spoke positively about Bungie's internal culture. He called the studio a company open to new ideas and outside perspectives, despite the high expectations associated with its previous games, including Halo and Destiny.
Marathon was released on March 5, 2026. However, Bungie later admitted that the shooter attracted fewer players than the developers had expected. The studio also announced its intention to expand interaction with the game world and go beyond the usual extraction shooter formula.
Ziegler left Bungie in July 2026, several months after the release. Currently, Marathon's development is led by Del Chafe III, and Ziegler himself is working on a new, as yet unannounced project.
