Many expected Game Science to present an expansion for Black Myth: Wukong at Gamescom Opening Night Live. But instead, they announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Studio director Feng Ji explained that the decision was due to "confusion, emptiness, and a kind of fear."
The development of the DLC quickly went in a different direction.
"Most of all, I felt confusion, emptiness, and fear at that time (I know it sounds dramatic - don't hit me). No matter how ashamed I was that I couldn't rejoice, these emotions kept coming back, especially when questions arose: 'Are you making a DLC or not? Which characters will be included? When will it be released?'"
According to Feng, as a professional adult, he knew how to hide the negativity and continued to convince himself to work, understanding that requests for DLC came from fans who supported the studio and its game.
But he felt "relief" when co-founder Yang Qi asked if it would be better to create a new game. That's how work on Zhong Kui began.
"New hero, new gameplay, new graphics, new technology, and a new story. We want to unleash our hands, experiment boldly, break away from patterns, and start from scratch."
The project will be released on consoles and PC, but it's too early to expect a release. Currently, the game is "almost an empty folder" without materials to show. It's a single-player action RPG, but even the plot and gameplay structure are not yet defined.
