Stormgate was conceived as a direct successor to StarCraft and looked promising. But after its release, the game failed to interest the audience.
Frost Giant studio has already announced that it is preparing for major layoffs, as the project turned out to be a failure. In early August, the RTS left early access and received a story campaign, but even this did not help attract players.
According to SteamDB, Stormgate has no more than 220–250 concurrent players at its peak. This is a catastrophic result for a free-to-play game with a large budget.
The head of Frost Giant, Tim Morten, commented on the situation. At Gamescom 2025, he noted that the project, created with a budget of over $40 million, is not generating the expected revenue. If the trend continues in the coming months, developers will be forced to make serious cost cuts and reduce staff.
