In an interview with Pocket Tactics, producer Shinji Hashimoto said that the technical limitations of mobile devices defined the key features of Resident Evil Survival Unit.
«When I had the opportunity to create a Resident Evil game, I wanted to make it as close as possible to the modern parts of the series. However, we faced limitations. <...> For example, sound is one of the most important factors in Resident Evil. But who turns on the sound or uses headphones on smartphones? We had to look for solutions, taking into account the features of the form factor».
One of the first solutions was to return to a fixed camera. It is more convenient for touch controls, and the use of "negative space" - areas of the game world hidden from the player's view - helps to increase tension and the atmosphere of fear. The combat system has also changed: instead of dynamic action, they have turned into tactical battles with elements of planning and resource management, which is better suited for the mobile format.
Hashimoto noted that he is pleased to return to the all-stars format, in which characters from different parts of Resident Evil are brought together in one game. According to him, this will allow fans to meet well-known heroes again. The producer has already used this technique in the Kingdom Hearts series during his time at Square Enix, so the idea of combining characters from different games and eras has long been familiar to him.
The release date for Resident Evil: Survival Unit has not yet been announced. It is known that the game will be released before the end of 2025 on iOS and Android.
