The cult visual novel by Kazutaka Kodaka and Spike Chunsoft will return in 2026 as an expanded remake.
Publisher Spike Chunsoft and studio Gemdrops have announced Danganronpa 2×2 — a remake of the visual novel Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. The project was presented at the Nintendo Direct presentation on September 12 and will be released in 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Danganronpa 2×2 is not just a visually updated version, but a full-fledged "double story." Players will be offered not only the classic story with improved graphics, but also a completely new storyline, taking place in the same setting and with the same characters. However, at some point, events will begin to unfold according to a different scenario, with new victims, killers, and outcomes.
Spike Chunsoft claims that the new story is comparable in content volume to the original Danganronpa 2.
Kazutaka Kodaka, the author of the original Danganronpa and co-founder of Too Kyo Games, is responsible for the overall supervision of the project. The script for the new version is being written by Yoichiro Koizumi, who previously worked on other games in the franchise. Masafumi Takada and Jun Fukuda are creating the music again, and Rui Komatsuzaki is responsible for the visual style and character design.
The original Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair was released in 2012 on PSP, and was later re-released on other platforms. Total sales of the entire series at the time of the announcement exceeded 8.5 million copies. And in November 2025, Danganronpa will turn 15 years old — so 2×2 will become a kind of anniversary edition.
