More and more developers are reporting that Valve's moderation is denying access to Early Access for risqué projects.
Steam is increasingly rejecting erotic games when attempting to publish in Early Access. This was reported by several independent developers. Although Valve has not officially announced a change in policy, the uniformity of wording in the denials indicates a tacit tightening of the rules.
The first to report this was a developer under the nickname Dammitbird — the author of the erotic RPG Heavy Hearts. He posted a screenshot of the Steam moderation response on social media: «Your game has failed review because we do not support the Early Access model for projects with "adult themes"».
Blue Fairy Media faced a similar situation — its project The Restoration of Aphrodisia was not allowed into early access, despite several rounds of approvals. According to the team, at no stage of the discussions did Steam representatives mention restrictions on NSFW content, but in the end a refusal came.
Some developers claim that such rejections began back in the summer — approximately during the period when Valve began to more actively take into account the requirements of payment systems.
Valve has not yet commented on the matter, despite the fact that a Rock Paper Shotgun journalist sent a request more than 10 days ago. The current Early Access documentation still does not prohibit 18+ content — everything indicates that this is an informal, but still more stringent regulation.
