Switch 2 helps make Final Fantasy VII Revelation noticeably smoother on PC

Square Enix has promised to address all performance issues.

Square Enix intends not to repeat the performance issues that plagued Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC and consoles. Game director of the trilogy, Naoki Hamaguchi, stated that the team has set a specific goal: to make the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Revelation significantly smoother compared to the previous installment.

According to Hamaguchi, the developers are still working on the recommended system requirements for PC. However, Hamaguchi did not directly comment on the question of DLSS 5 support.

One of the reasons that could help achieve better optimization is an unusual development strategy for a project of this scale. Nintendo Switch 2 is initially one of Revelation's target platforms. However, the main work is still being done with PC and PS5 in mind, which remain the most familiar platforms for the team. There is a separate team dedicated to porting and optimization to adapt the game for less powerful hardware.

Hamaguchi specifically emphasized that the developers are not going to artificially limit the main version of the game for the sake of Switch 2. In particular, the team is not aiming to initially create assets with lower resolution to then achieve acceptable performance on the portable console. Instead, porting specialists independently work with textures, polygon count, shading level, and other parameters.

The experience of porting Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to Switch 2 also proved useful for creating the third part. Developers have already gained practical knowledge about what internal optimizations are necessary for a large-scale game to run on less powerful hardware. Hamaguchi admits that porting such a large open world to a portable device is a challenging task, but the accumulated experience allows the team to better prepare for it in the case of Revelation.
