GOG commented on the removal of hundreds of games from Steam, calling the pressure from payment systems a dangerous precedent for the industry.

The removal of hundreds of explicit games from Steam in July 2025 sparked a wave of criticism in the gaming community. The focus was mainly on the actions of payment systems and activist groups. Now GOG has also stated its position: the company considers what is happening a threat to the preservation of digital gaming heritage.

In an interview with Automaton West, GOG's Public Relations Director Piotr Gnyyp called the situation a "matter of game preservation," emphasizing that any work removed from a digital store could potentially be lost forever. "It's especially worrying when games disappear under external pressure," he noted. This view is consistent with GOG's mission, which focuses on preserving and making games accessible regardless of their genre or focus.

Nevertheless, Gnyyp noted that GOG, Steam, and other digital platforms operate within the laws of the countries where they are represented. Although these laws can be ambiguous and not always consistent, in the case of the 2025 censorship, the key role was played not by state bodies, but by payment systems and activist groups.
