The developers of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake have commented on the costume changes of the main characters. They explained that the outfits were not censored, but only received improved textures.

The message appeared on the official social media of the series after discussions among fans that arose after the announcement of the remake. The team thanked fans for their support of the franchise and listed the updates in the project. The release is scheduled for early 2026 and is being created on the latest Koei Tecmo engine. The costumes of Mio and Mayu Amakura have been reworked with textures to match the improved graphics. The developers emphasized that the changes are designed to enhance detail, not to change the original designs.

In addition to character models, the remake modernizes the classic horror. Minakami Village, known for its frightening atmosphere, has received darker and more realistic lighting and shadows to enhance the tension. The main gameplay elements — controls, level, and battles with spirits — have been reworked by Team Ninja Studio, using their experience in creating action role-playing games.

The project is overseen by producer Fuminiko Yasuda and game directors Hidehiko Nakajima and Makoto Shibata, who emphasized their desire to make the remake the most immersive in the series.

The original game was released in 2003 on PlayStation 2. Later, the project was ported to Xbox and a remake was released for Wii in 2012. The 2026 release will be the second full remake, combining nostalgia and modern horror technologies.
