Interest in portable gaming devices has grown after the official announcement of ROG Xbox Ally prices. With the release of new devices from ASUS under the Xbox brand, fans have begun to discuss how Sony might approach its own project, codenamed Canis.
Insider KeplerL2 shared his thoughts, emphasizing the difference between the new ASUS products and the rumors about Sony. According to him:
"This is not comparable to a console/portable PS6. The ASUS device is produced in small quantities and sold at a profit."
The comment came in response to community concerns that the rising cost of components could make a portable PlayStation too expensive.
The insider clarified that Canis will receive a compact SoC, which will help reduce production costs.
"Canis is a very small SoC, it consumes less power than current portables, so you can save on the board, cooling, and battery. I think $499 is realistic if you don't put in an OLED", KeplerL2 noted. This contradicts assumptions that a device with at least half the power of a PS5 could cost more than $600.
There have been no official announcements about the Sony Canis project yet. According to allegedly AMD, the portable console will become part of the PS6 ecosystem, be able to run games natively, and support backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5.
