Diablo 4 remains the leader in the ARPG genre, largely thanks to the history of the franchise, which began with David Brevik's idea. Today, he believes that the game's success forces Blizzard to be cautious.
In an interview, Brevik noted that the community regularly reproaches the game for the monotony of the seasons. The tenth season broke the online record, but many believe that the mechanics are only reworked from old ideas.
«When you have a big and popular game, any change will cause loud discontent. It's stressful. You have to believe in the chosen course, even if not everyone understands it».
In his opinion, players stay in Diablo 4 because it is impossible to keep up with the flow of new products. Brevik explained that the main competition has shifted towards AA and indie projects, where fresh ideas appear. This is ironic, because Diablo itself was inspired by Rogue, and now modern "roguelikes" draw ideas from Diablo.
Despite the harsh criticism of Blizzard during the 2022 scandal, he acknowledged the studio's careful attitude towards Diablo 2, which, after the Resurrected remaster, received updates and new content.
«Blizzard has found a balance: just enough changes to not move away from the essence. This is a respectful decision, and I liked it».
