Derek Kolstad was impressed by the freedom Ubisoft gave him when working on Sam Fisher's animated story.
Showrunner of the upcoming animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, Derek Kolstad, is actively sharing details with various publications ahead of the release. In a recent exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, he spoke about the restrictions Ubisoft set for the Netflix series and compared them to the stricter framework that existed during his time at Marvel Studios.
«Whenever you deal with any intellectual property, there are always going to be certain restrictions. I worked on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” for Disney, and while it’s fun to play in their sandbox with their toys, you still feel like you’re in a titanium tunnel».
According to Kolstad, when he suggested to Ubisoft to tell a story about an old Sam Fisher, the company agreed and set only two conditions — «to love the character and respect the intellectual property». Otherwise, the author was given complete freedom of action, which especially surprised him after his experience at Marvel.
However, as it became known from Kolstad's previous interview for IGN, Ubisoft rejected some changes, citing its own plans. What exactly — is still unknown.
