Fans of classic late 90s shooters have a reason to revisit the planet Na Pali. Modder mstewart401 has released the UnrealRTX project on ModDB — a complete remaster of the 1998 Unreal campaign, created using NVIDIA RTX Remix technology.
There is no multiplayer here, but the game experience has been completely transformed: ray tracing, global illumination, dynamic shadows, volumetric lighting effects, and realistic light sources that react to the environment have been added. The author notes that each location has become deeper and more atmospheric, while the level structure remains original. UnrealRTX uses PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials, which allows surfaces to realistically reflect light, taking into account metal, roughness, and scattering. Some models and geometry have been replaced to increase detail.
Most of the textures have been restored using AI tools from RTX Remix, and the vegetation was created using NVIDIA Omniverse. Through the UnrealED editor, the modder added dummy objects, which were then turned into grass, and placed new light sources where they were not before.
About 90% of the height maps and almost all the glow maps were drawn manually — in MS Paint. The mod size reaches 48.29 GB, but in the future, the author plans to optimize by reducing the resolution and roughness from 8K.
