Ubisoft has showcased its first fully playable research project using generative AI — Teammates. This is a continuation of the experiments started at GDC 2024 with the Neo NPC project, but now the focus is on real voice control of the squad, as well as dynamic NPC behavior in combat and dialogues.
The action takes place in a dystopian future. The player is a member of the resistance, infiltrating an enemy base to find five missing comrades and restore their last memories. The player is accompanied by two NPC partners — Pablo and Sofia, as well as a voice AI assistant, Yaspar.
Key features:
- Yaspar understands natural speech: can highlight enemies and objects, tell lore, change game settings, and even pause the game with a voice command
- Pablo and Sofia are fully "alive" partners who can be given orders directly during combat. They react not only to commands but also to the context of what is happening, the player's tone, and their previous remarks
- Everything happens in real time: the AI independently generates lines and actions within the "framework" set by the authors — the characters do not go out of character and do not violate the lore
Teammates has already undergone closed testing with several hundred players. The Ubisoft team is collecting feedback, refining the technology, and preparing an explanatory video to show the project to the general public.
