Director of \"Deadpool & Wolverine\" Admits He's Already Thinking About the Next Deadpool Movie — And It Scares Him

After the colossal success of \"Deadpool & Wolverine,\" which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, it would be hard to leave the story behind. Director Shawn Levy is not yet ready to officially confirm work on \"Deadpool 4,\" but in the On Film With Kevin McCarthy podcast, he admitted that he is already considering ideas for a potential sequel — although the very thought of it evokes conflicting feelings in him.

According to Levy, the prospect of another film in the series is not so much inspiring as frightening.

The director explains that the main problem with sequels is the fine line between repeating and destroying what viewers loved about the original. The new part should feel fresh, but at the same time remain true to the spirit of the hero, and any mistake can undermine the trust of fans.

Levy goes on to discuss the nature of finales and long-running franchises. He emphasizes that successful third parts only work when they rely on the emotional capital of past films. He cites \"Back to the Future Part III,\" \"The Return of the King,\" and \"Avengers: Endgame\" as examples — stories that \"earned\" their catharsis over the years.

According to him, the same principle underlies \"Deadpool & Wolverine\" and the final season of \"Stranger Things\": an emotional connection with viewers gives projects a head start. Levy notes that it was the fan love for Wade and Logan, as well as the legacy of 20th Century Fox, that allowed the film to work so effectively — the jokes and meta-techniques only worked because viewers have known Wade and Logan for a long time.

In the meantime, Levy is focused on another major project. Right now, he is filming a stand-alone film in the \"Star Wars\" universe with Ryan Gosling. The premiere of \"Star Wars: Starfighter\" is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
