The victim says he used a power supply that meets the ATX 3.1 standard (PowerSpec 1050 GFM) and a native 12V-2x6 cable that came with it — without adapters, which are often criticized for problems with previous models like the RTX 4090.

The owner of a powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 video card faced a serious problem: the 16-pin power connector (12V-2x6) not only melted, but completely charred and, according to the user, even caught fire with an open flame. This is one of the most severe incidents with power connectors in the RTX 50 series.

Reddit user nmp14fayl said that he had been using the RTX 5090 for almost nine months. On Christmas Eve (December 24), the video card suddenly failed.

The photos show that the connector on the GPU side is heavily melted and charred, and several centimeters of the cable are severely damaged by fire. In addition, there are traces of burns on the liquid cooling system (AIO) tubes.

The photo does not show sharp bends in the cable near the connector, although it is unclear whether the card was installed vertically.

Problems with melting 16-pin connectors are quite common in high-performance NVIDIA cards, but cases with open flames and such severe charring are rare.
