Director Christophe Gans said that when creating the film "Return to Silent Hill", he relied not only on his own vision, but also on the ideas of fans of the series. In an interview with ComicBook, he noted that it was important for him to turn the film adaptation into a dialogue with those who played Silent Hill 2 and interpreted its story in their own way.
"It was important for me to make a film that viewers who know nothing about Silent Hill can understand. But for fans, I wanted to turn it into a discussion about their own feelings about the game. Each player has their own interpretation of Silent Hill 2 and its symbols - and all these interpretations are correct. Therefore, I imagined my film as a conversation with fans: "This is how I see this or that scene." That is why the adaptation includes all the iconic moments that allow you to enter into this dialogue."
In addition, Gans admitted that while working on the film, he was inspired by fan discussions and theories. He compared this process to what was happening around the TV series "Lost", whose authors closely followed the audience's reaction and sometimes adjusted the plot under the influence of fan theories.
"I did the same thing while working on my adaptation of Silent Hill 2. Sometimes I stuck to my own idea, and sometimes I came across a fan version online and thought: "Yes, this is better than what I came up with." So there was a place for fan ideas in the film."
It is not surprising that the first reviews on Letterboxd agree that "Return to Silent Hill" is primarily aimed at fans of the original game, while unprepared viewers may find it more difficult to grasp all the nuances - especially in the lines of minor characters such as Angela and Eddie Dombrowski.
"Return to Silent Hill" will be released in Russian cinemas on January 22.
