The developers of Highguard admitted that the announcement of their debut project could have gone much better. The trailer, shown at the end of The Game Awards in December 2025, failed to distinguish the game from many other hero shooters, which led to a wave of skeptical and mocking posts on social networks, and many declared the project "dead" without even launching it.

In addition, answering a question from journalists about how Wildlight feels about the gaming community's habit of judging the quality of a game by its online presence, Highguard's lead game designer Mohammad Alavi stated that the game does not need a large audience.

Honestly, we don't need the numbers to be huge to consider the project a success. We are a small team. It's not difficult to find a match for six people. We want to see a small group of genuinely dedicated fans. This will allow us to grow further. Of course, being a target for internet hate is unpleasant, but I try to focus on creating the best possible game for people. That's the main thing.
