Against the backdrop of the changes, the question arose whether the abandonment of Overwatch 2 was an admission of error. Online Services Manager Walter Kong disagrees with this:
If we could go back, I probably wouldn't call the game Overwatch 2. But that period was important — we were moving to a permanent game-service format, and it was extremely difficult. It was a necessary step to get to where we are now.
Game Director Aaron Keller calls Overwatch an "eternal game." According to him, the team is not trying to admit failure:
We just don't want players to think about when the game will be replaced by Overwatch 3.
At the same time, Keller clarified: "eternal is too loud a word," but Blizzard's intention is to support the shooter for as long as players will play it.
