Blizzard Entertainment has announced major changes to Overwatch. The shooter will get a reworked seasonal model with annual storylines and ten new heroes - five of whom will be available this week. One of the key decisions was to return to the name Overwatch without the number "2", which part of the community had long opposed. Players have met the rebranding in different ways
Against the backdrop of the changes, the question arose whether the abandonment of Overwatch 2 was an admission of error. Online Services Manager Walter Kong disagrees with this:
If we could go back, I probably wouldn't call the game Overwatch 2. But that period was important — we were moving to a permanent game-service format, and it was extremely difficult. It was a necessary step to get to where we are now.
Game Director Aaron Keller calls Overwatch an "eternal game." According to him, the team is not trying to admit failure:
We just don't want players to think about when the game will be replaced by Overwatch 3.
At the same time, Keller clarified: "eternal is too loud a word," but Blizzard's intention is to support the shooter for as long as players will play it.
