CAPCOM's RE Engine game engine has faced a mixed reputation in recent years, particularly due to performance issues in Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon's Dogma 2. However, it has performed significantly better in more linear projects. The Resident Evil 4 remake was one such game, which did not suffer from serious technical flaws at launch. Nevertheless, a recent update has essentially made the game's condition worse than at release.
Digital Foundry technical expert Alex Battaglia criticized Capcom's decision, calling the introduction of new DRM protection into already released software "an idiotic decision". According to his analysis, on a system with a Ryzen 5 3600 processor and an RTX 4070 Super video card, the implementation of Enigma Protector led to a decrease in CPU bandwidth of approximately 40%. In the village battle scene, the reduction is about 20% due to the additional load from the AI opponents, creating a different type of bottleneck, but in most other scenarios, the drawdown remains at 40%.
