PlayStation Closed 6 Studios During the PS5 Generation. Players Criticize Sony's Decisions

During the PS5 generation, Sony has already closed six teams, including Japan Studio. Since 2019, the company has acquired 11 studios, and users on social networks are summarizing their fate.

Since Leiden's departure, PlayStation's management has not been doing a great job.

List of studios and their current status:

  • Bluepoint Games (transition to games-as-a-service — closed),
  • Firewalk (Concord for 2,000 players on Steam — closed),
  • Neon Koi (mobile live-service — closed before release),
  • Bungie (3.6 billion dollar deal; Destiny 2's fall from 300,000 to 10,000 players on Steam — layoffs),
  • Haven (FairGame$ received negative reaction — studio continues to operate),
  • Valkyrie (support studio, worked on Concord — status of other projects unknown),
  • Firesprite (worked on PSVR2 and Horizon; currently working on Star Citizen),
  • Nixxes Software (PC ports — mostly successful),
  • Insomniac (games-as-a-service canceled; Spider-Man 2's budget exceeded 300 million dollars; working on Wolverine),
  • Housemarque (Returnal — niche success; working on SAROS),
  • Fabrik (Twisted Metal Live Service canceled — status unknown).

The closure of Bluepoint is considered particularly painful, as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection sold about 2.9 million copies, and Demon’s Souls Remake on PS5 exceeded 1.4 million. Players don't understand why a studio with such a portfolio was closed amid active investments in games-as-a-service.
