The update of the classic for the Switch 2 did not go according to plan.
In early February, Nintendo released an updated version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2 with advertised support for 4K and 60 frames per second. After release, some players began complaining about the image quality.
The discussion was sparked by a post on Reddit in which a user said that he had managed to get a refund for the update. According to him, he contacted Nintendo support and stated that the Switch 2 version looked worse than the original. The support representative noted that the company does not usually issue refunds for digital purchases, but in this case the request was approved after a brief review — the decision took about a minute and a half.
The author of the post suggests that instead of native 4K, the game uses upscaling from Full HD. According to his observations, the image goes through aggressive smoothing and filtering, making the picture look blurry while distant textures lose sharpness.
The user compared the update with the Wii U version run through the Cemu emulator in native 4K and said that he had expected comparable quality from the official upgrade, especially since it turned out to be paid. Other users also noted that, according to their observations, the interface continues to run at 30 fps despite the advertised 60 frames per second.
Comments also appeared from other console owners who were likewise able to obtain refunds. Some of them see this as indirect confirmation of technical issues and are urging others to contact support.
