Cool reviews from critics once again did not prevent Nintendo and Illumination from blowing up the box office.
"Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" continues its confident start in the global box office. In its first five days, the animated film grossed about $373 million worldwide, of which $190 million came from the USA and Canada. This is not only the largest launch of 2026, but also one of the best five-day starts in box office history.
The sequel fell slightly short of the result of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" in 2023. The first part had about $387.8 million worldwide over a comparable period. The gap is minimal and quite typical for sequels.
It is indicative that the film achieved such collections against the background of weak ratings from critics. It has 35 points on Metacritic, and the rating on Rotten Tomatoes is around 40%. But viewers, as in the case of the first part, received the film much warmer. The film has an A- rating on CinemaScore and about 90% user rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Separately, analysts note the structure of the audience. According to Comscore, almost two-thirds of viewers in the US were rare moviegoers who go to the cinema only 2-3 times a year. Attracting this segment allows "Galactic Cinema" to count on stable dynamics and potentially reach collections comparable to the first film, which earned $1.36 billion worldwide.
In Russian cinemas, the premiere of "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" will take place on April 9.
