Sony Lays Off Hundreds of Employees for Next-Gen Content

Sony is preparing a major restructuring and plans to cut "several hundred" employees. According to Variety, the cuts will affect various divisions of Sony Pictures Entertainment - from film and television to the corporate segment.

The process has already begun and will last several months. The company employs about 12,000 people, so this is a large-scale operation.

Sources clarify that this is not just about saving money: the decision is strategic and aimed at development. Sony wants to focus on key areas: developing franchises and brands, anime, new formats for viewers, next-generation content, projects for specific platforms (including YouTube), game adaptations, and integration with the Sony ecosystem.

As part of the changes, the company is reorganizing television structures, merging departments, and closing the VFX studio Pixomondo. The departure of a key manager, Colin Davis, who was responsible for comedy projects, has also been confirmed.

The new CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Ravi Ahuja, noted:

We are aligning the organization with the future development of the business, not with what it used to be. This means changes in structure and investments. We are cutting some positions while focusing more on areas that are critical to the future.

Among the projects the company is betting on are The Last of Us, the planned God of War series, as well as the Spider-Man, The Boys, and Ghostbusters franchises.
