"The Backrooms" to become part of the Backrooms web series canon - Kane Parsons reveals new details
A24's Backrooms adaptation will not be a reboot or reinterpretation.
Kane Parsons, director of the full-length horror film "The Backrooms," stated that the A24 film will remain part of the canon of the viral web series Backrooms, which has been released on YouTube since 2022. According to the author, this was a fundamental condition from the early stages of development.
"I feel a great responsibility to the online audience and the people who have already invested in this story. Therefore, it was a non-negotiable condition for me that everything remain in strict continuity with the original."
At the same time, the director immediately warned that viewers should not expect a complete explanation of the nature of the "backrooms."
"It all comes down to who has the right to give answers. I have immense faith in the audience's ability to put the puzzle together based on context. Personally, I don't believe in real answers. You can describe almost anything in such a way that it seems like an answer: people need it, they value it, they seek it, and they are obsessed with it. In Backrooms, the focus has always been more on this obsession than on the answers themselves. Although that doesn't mean there are no answers at all."
Earlier, the first reviews after private screenings already appeared online. Critics and viewers call "The Backrooms" one of the most unusual horror films of recent years, praising the atmosphere, visual effects, and numerous references to The Backrooms mythology. Among the complaints, a convoluted plot and sometimes weak dialogues are most often mentioned. Judging by Parsons' words, part of this complexity is inherent in the very idea of the film.
The international premiere of the film is scheduled for May 29. In Russian cinemas, "The Backrooms" will be released on June 4, 2026.
