Critics warmly received the new series about mysterious creatures and the secrets of a closed town, which this time will have to be saved by the elderly.

Netflix has launched "The Boroughs" – a new sci-fi series produced by the Duffer Brothers, creators of "Stranger Things". As of publication, the show has a 92% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on the first thirteen critical reviews.

The Duffers are actively used in marketing, although the series was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Previously, they worked on "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" and the anime film "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim". However, the similarity to "Stranger Things" is immediately apparent here: instead of teenagers from a small town, the story centers on seniors from an elite community in the middle of the New Mexico desert, who will have to face monsters, conspiracies, and other people's secrets.

IGN directly describes "The Boroughs" as "Stranger Things" for seniors, but notes that the creators use a familiar structure of mystical investigation for a story about people who face otherworldly horror, age, illness, and the fear of death.

Variety calls the series "a sci-fi horror for the ages" and praises its handling of themes of aging, loneliness, pain, and society's attitude towards the elderly. AV Club draws parallels with Spielberg and classic 80s sci-fi, and also highlights the acting ensemble and the show's atmosphere.

The first season of "The Boroughs" consists of eight episodes. All episodes are now available on Netflix.
