"The market is behaving abnormally": Analysts asked about Steam Machine price after Steam Deck price increase
Some experts do not rule out that Valve will set a four-digit price for the Steam Machine.
In late May, Valve announced a price increase for the Steam Deck. Devices became more expensive, and now the 1TB OLED version costs almost a thousand dollars.
Eurogamer journalists decided to discuss with analysts the potential cost of another Valve product – Steam Machines, which have not yet gone on sale.
Mat Piscatella from Circana noted that the market is currently behaving abnormally. It is affected by a number of external factors that do not allow for highly reliable forecasts:
When it comes to such questions, we enter the territory of prophecy, and my crystal ball hasn't been working very well all year.
Currently, Mat Piscatella admits that the cost of a Steam Machine could exceed a thousand dollars:
My suggestion is that yesterday's Steam Deck price increase indicates that we will likely see four-digit prices for Steam Machines [...] However, I am not very confident in this estimate. If I had to name a specific figure, I would assume a starting price for the base version of the Steam Machine at $1200, at the moment.
The analyst added that he "would not be surprised at all" if the actual price of the Steam Machine was significantly higher or much lower than this mark.
Chris Dring from The Game Business gave a similar assessment of the market situation and noted the high prices of components.
