Deep, Deep Crisis: "The Mandalorian and Grogu" Loses Box Office Battle to "Obsession" in Domestic Release
Analysts record a new box office anti-record for the space saga.
"The Mandalorian and Grogu" continues to lose ground in the American box office. According to the latest data, the film has grossed approximately $158 million in the US and lost to the independent horror film "Obsession," which, with a budget of $750 thousand, has already surpassed $161 million in domestic box office. Globally, the situation currently looks different: $296 million for "The Mandalorian" versus $234 million for "Obsession," but the dynamics are not in Disney's favor.
The low-budget horror film demonstrates rare resilience. Thanks to strong word-of-mouth, the film increased its box office for three consecutive weekends and only showed a symbolic drop of 7.3% on the fourth weekend. Currently, "Obsession" consistently brings in about $4-5 million daily. At the same time, "The Mandalorian and Grogu" plummeted by 70.1% on its second weekend, dropped another 59.9% on the third, and now collects approximately $1.5 million per day.
At this rate, "Obsession" may eventually overtake the Lucasfilm blockbuster in worldwide gross as well. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Din Djarin and little Grogu still need to earn about $100 million to break even, which seems an impossible task at the current pace.
The lukewarm reception of "The Mandalorian" in theaters intensifies talks about the crisis of the "Star Wars" brand. If the film cannot significantly increase its box office in the coming weeks, it risks setting an anti-record for domestic box office among full-length films in the franchise. Even "Solo: A Star Wars Story," long considered the series' main commercial failure, once surpassed the $200 million mark in the US.
The next major project in the franchise will be the film "Star Wars: Starfighter." Its events will unfold after the events of "Skywalker. The Rise." With this release, Lucasfilm hopes to open a new page in the universe and move away from stories related to the Skywalker legacy. The premiere of "Starfighter" is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
