Fans of the multiplayer extraction-shooter Arc Raiders have long complained about item duplication exploits. Embark Studios has already eliminated several methods that went viral in the community, but tech enthusiasts are finding new ways to break the game.
The author of the YouTube channel The Gaming Merchant recently conducted an investigation and showed the scale of the problem. He organized an operation to "infiltrate" PvP-oriented lobbies (in the game, matchmaking works on the logic: the more aggressively a person plays, the "more aggressive" the lobbies the system sends them to will be).
In PvP lobbies, the blogger began to notice that "practically every" player had a full set of high-level gear with top modifications. Thorough preparation for PvP battles is not something extraordinary, but The Gaming Merchant suspiciously often encountered very well-equipped players.
The Gaming Merchant continued his investigation and was able to find groups and channels on social media where a black market for Arc Raiders items is organized – in-game gear is sold for real money.
It is assumed that the goods (weapons and equipment) are obtained using item duplication bugs. There are no mandatory wipes in the game, so entrepreneurs can create a network of accounts and pre-fill their inventory with cloned items before developers fix the loophole in the system.
According to The Gaming Merchant, a significant portion of item sales in Arc Raiders takes place on Asian servers. This is attributed to the fact that they are less populated by players, making it easier to arrange and complete a transaction.
