Lords of the Fallen II became a benchmark for Unreal Engine 5 usage - developers talked about technology adoption
Modern technologies were used in the creation of the sequel, which simplified the development of some elements.
A variety of projects are created on the Unreal Engine. Epic Games tracks them and creates “profiles” for some, as well as publishes interviews with developers.
For example, Lords of the Fallen II by CI Games was recently highlighted. Game Director James Lowe explained that the developers wanted to take all the key features, the very identity of what they had already created (in the previous part), and “push it into new territories that truly capture players and allow us to leave our mark on the genre”:
We had a clear goal — to master Unreal Engine 5 as a weapon […] We already understood this engine: we knew what it was capable of and how it could further unleash our capabilities. One of the most important features of Lords of the Fallen II is Umbral — our dual-world mechanic, where you can seamlessly transition from Axiom into the world of the dead at any moment… and sometimes — even when you don't want to.
For the previous game, the “dual world” was created by the developers entirely by hand. They built Axiom, and then everything in Umbral was created on top of it, which was a laborious task. Now, thanks to the Unreal Engine Procedural Generation Framework, the creators of Lords of the Fallen II can first build Axiom, set parameters that artists can adjust, and “fill all of Umbral with all those horrible things that are there”:
Of course, “procedural generation” does not mean that artists lose control. The Unreal Engine PCG framework allows for many things — for example, setting specific areas where you can specify: “here I want this,” or “here I, on the contrary, do not want, say, a school,” and so on.
In addition, Unreal Engine tools allow developers to quickly create diverse combat situations, and designers can easily modify game animations.
Earlier, the creators of Lords of the Fallen II announced a game delay, now the release is expected in the first quarter of 2027. You can add the game to your Steam wishlist via the following link; it will also be available on consoles.
