Fans are porting Mario Kart Wii to PC with 4K and online mode
The fan project Mario Kart Wiicompiled by developer patchzy recompiles Mario Kart Wii to run natively on PC in 4K with unlocked FPS.
Fans of classic Nintendo games are preparing a surprise for PC users. The Mario Kart Wiicompiled project has been announced, which will allow the Wii racing game to run natively on computers.
Project author patchzy reported that the first public beta will be released in August 2026. At launch, online mode and support for the Retro Rewind mod, which adds over 200 tracks, will be available.
The trailer shows a working version of the game on PC. The developers are not creating new models or improved textures, but thanks to recompilation, Mario Kart Wii will be able to run at up to 4K resolution and with an unlocked frame rate.
The creators emphasize that the project does not contain Nintendo files. To run it, users will need their own copy of the original Mario Kart Wii ROM file. This approach is also used in other fan ports, including Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Mario Kart Wii was released in 2008 and remains one of the most popular installments in the series.
