A Step Away from Tragedy: Austin Abrams Nearly Died on the Set of "Resident Evil"
Zach Cregger revealed how the refusal of computer graphics almost cost the lead actor his life.
Director Zach Cregger ("Barbarian") shared a crazy story from the set of the "Resident Evil" reboot in an interview with IGN. The filmmaker recounted how lead actor Austin Abrams almost died right on set.
The incident occurred during the filming of an action scene where Abrams' character runs down a street while infected bodies fall and explode from building rooftops. Cregger deliberately refused to use computer graphics, opting instead to drop real bags of artificial blood from cranes.
"One of the bags went off prematurely and flew literally a couple of centimeters from Austin. And that thing weighs almost 70 kilograms – it would have just killed him on the spot! If he had taken a step to the right – that would have been it. But that very take made it into the final cut of the film. Afterwards, I even asked, 'Hey, maybe we should do it again?', and they replied, 'No, we're not repeating anything – he just almost died!'"
In addition, the director spoke about how difficult the constant night shoots in the Czech Republic were for him:
"According to the plot, the hero arrives at a farm, and the first thing that happens is a dog attacks him. And so I'm in the middle of nowhere, in terrible cold, trying to deal with this crazy dog to make it do what I need. Working with animals is hard. And this one was just awful. Plus, I got sick. It was one of those moments when... I had been living on a night schedule for months because the film takes place at night, and I just ran out of fuel. I remember thinking, 'I'd rather be anywhere in the world but here, in this dog-cold, trying to get this dog to do what I need from it.' But I think everyone who makes movies has a moment like that."
The premiere of the new "Resident Evil" is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Simultaneously with the interview's publication, Sony Pictures unveiled the first full trailer for the film.
