Fourth Season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Premieres with Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Rating
Journalists were shown just over half of the penultimate season in advance.
The first reviews for the fourth season of the series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" have appeared on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The show about Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise premiered with a 100% "fresh" rating based on the first 14 reviews published after a press screening of six out of ten episodes.
However, 100% "freshness" does not mean that the season received exclusively rave reviews — the indicator only suggests the absence of scathing reviews. On Metacritic, the project has a more modest score of 71 out of 100, and the reviews themselves contain a fair amount of reserved criticism.
For example, Collider notes that the season is worth watching for the Easter eggs, but fans who expect deeper drama "will have to use their own imagination." RogerEbert's reviewer directly called the new episodes "as exhilarating as they are frustrating," and Pop Culture Maniacs summarized that the season turned out "not great, but noticeably better against the backdrop of the controversial third season."
Inverse adds that the fourth season has become "a charming synthesis of modern television trends and that very 1990s 'Star Trek' magic," and Slashfilm specifically praised the creators for their willingness to experiment:
"Not every episode is an unqualified success, and different fans will surely react differently to each one. However, the series' desire to constantly try something new is commendable."
In the new season, the creators will indeed continue to experiment. "Strange New Worlds" will retain the format of standalone adventures of the Enterprise crew under the command of Christopher Pike, but will again change the style and genre from episode to episode: viewers can expect space noir, a ghost story, an adventure in the spirit of "The Hangover," and an episode in which the characters turn into dolls.
The fourth season premiered on July 23 on Paramount+. New episodes will be released on Thursdays until September 24. The series has already been renewed for a fifth and final season, which will consist of six episodes.
