"It's Just Lying in a Box, Waiting": Todd McFarlane Talks About Secret Spawn Cartoon

The character's creator hopes for the success of the live-action reboot to immediately release a full-fledged animated project with Keith David and Mark Hamill.

Todd McFarlane shared unexpected news: the continuation of the cult animated series "Spawn" (1997-1999) from HBO already partially exists. According to the author, he has a finished 90-minute animated project with a fully recorded cast.

Keith David returned to the role of Al Simmons (Spawn), and Mark Hamill took on the role of the weary detective Twitch Williams. McFarlane said that during the recording, Hamill, out of habit, tried to use a bright "cartoonish" voice in the style of the Joker, but the character's creator asked him to play an ordinary person tired of life:

The project's production stopped due to legal disputes with previous producers, after which McFarlane bought back all the rights. Storyboarding and voice acting are already complete – the cartoon only needs final foley sound and an animation studio to transfer the drawings to the screen.

McFarlane plans to launch the cartoon into production and release it immediately after the release of his long-suffering reboot film titled "King Spawn." When exactly this will happen, however, McFarlane does not specify.

The idea for the project arose back in 2015, and full-fledged development with Blumhouse began in 2017. Jamie Foxx is set to play the main role in the film, and Jeremy Renner is announced for the role of Twitch. In a recent interview, McFarlane said that Renner agreed to participate on the condition that he could approve the cinematographer.

However, despite a finished script written by Scott Silver ("Joker"), Malcolm Spellman ("The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"), and Matt Mixon, the film still does not have an approved director or premiere date.
