"Now I'm the Enemy": Robert Downey Jr. on How It Feels to Play Doctor Doom
The actor shared what it's like to be on the other side of the villain's mask.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con 2026, Robert Downey Jr. spoke about what it's like to switch from playing Earth's defender Tony Stark to the Multiverse's main antagonist, Doctor Doom.
According to Downey Jr., Stark and Doom are united by their brilliant minds and passion for science, but their motives are completely opposite. Moreover, the change of character significantly altered the atmosphere on set:
"It was a joy to play him, but being on the other side of the villain's mask is incredibly strange. It creates a feeling of absolute isolation. I watched them all interact during breaks and realized that now I'm the enemy."
Other actors from the film were also present at the interview, including Chris Evans, who returned to his role as Steve Rogers. He compared the filming to working on the first "Avengers" movie. According to the actor, Evans again found himself forgetting his own lines while watching his colleague's transformation:
"On the first 'Avengers,' I sometimes just watched and thought, 'That's Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark.' And then I remembered, 'Damn, I have a line.' I felt something similar again on this shoot because I couldn't wait to see him in that role."
The premiere of the film "Avengers: Doctor Doom" is scheduled for December 18, 2026. The film will pit Doctor Doom against the heroes of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and the X-Men.
