"It's not one horror story - it's all the stories at once": Cooperative horror shooter Rules of Engagement: The Grey State gets a new gameplay trailer
The game will be released on PC by the end of this year.
Grey State Studio has unveiled a new trailer for the tactical horror shooter Rules of Engagement: The Grey State, focusing on its cooperative PvE mode. Previously, the developers had already confirmed that the game's main format would be built around PvPvE mechanics in the spirit of extraction shooters, but this time the focus is on cooperative gameplay and fighting monsters.
The game takes place on Borey Island, located in a mysterious dimension called the Grey Zone. Players will take on the role of elite operatives, known as Striders, sent by a secret organization to retrieve valuable alien artifacts. The main goal of expeditions is to obtain a mysterious object called the Apex, fending off endless waves of monsters and managing to evacuate with the loot.
The new video shows several diverse locations – industrial complexes, hilly terrain, an abandoned village, and an urban area. They are inhabited by very unusual enemies: from a reanimated washing machine with tentacles and a giant creature with a lantern for a head to toothy hands and anomalies resembling spatial distortions.
To combat the threats, players will be offered a wide arsenal of weapons, including sniper rifles, submachine guns, assault rifles, and other firearms. The main gameplay loop is built around finding artifacts, completing missions, and successful evacuation.
The authors note that the monster design is inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and artist H.R. Giger. Grey State Studio describes its universe as a mixture of various horror sources – books, films, and creepypastas. According to one of the developers, "it's not one horror story – it's all the stories at once."
