"Die Hard," "Back to the Future," and "Home Alone": Zach Cregger Revealed What Inspired the New "Resident Evil"
Iconic movie classics helped develop the main character's personality in the new Resident Evil adaptation.
Director Zach Cregger shared new details about his upcoming Resident Evil adaptation. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, the filmmaker admitted that while working on the main character's personality and reactions, he and actor Austin Abrams were inspired by 1980s cinema – specifically, the films "Die Hard," "Back to the Future," and "Home Alone."
According to Cregger, during filming, he and Abrams constantly referred to these benchmarks for scenes:
"We'd get to a scene, and Austin would be like, 'Do you think I'm more McClane [from 'Die Hard'] here or McFly [from 'Back to the Future']?' And I'd be like, 'You're McFly here.' For most of the movie, the character acts like Marty McFly: he's confused and has no idea what to do. That's his default state. And only occasionally does he manage to pull off something cool, turning into John McClane. And the rest of the time, he's panicking like a real Kevin McCallister from 'Home Alone.'"
Cregger also added that he decided to cast Austin Abrams in the lead role while working on his previous film, "The Re-Education of Molly Singer." The director was absolutely delighted with their collaboration and wrote the script for the new "Resident Evil" with Abrams specifically in mind.
The premiere of the new Resident Evil film adaptation in theaters is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
