Avengers: Endgame Overtakes Avatar Again to Become the Highest-Grossing Film in History
The re-release brought Marvel's film another $126 million and helped it reclaim the record after seven years.
Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing film in history thanks to the re-release of the 'Avengers: Endgame Re-release' version. Over two weekends, the extended version earned $126 million, bringing the film's total worldwide gross to $2.925 billion, compared to James Cameron's Avatar at $2.924 billion. The difference is currently about $1.8 million, but the theatrical run continues, so the lead could still increase.
Avengers: Endgame first became the highest-grossing film in history in 2019 after its initial theatrical run. In 2021, Avatar regained the lead thanks to a re-release in China, and then increased its box office after another wide release before the premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. Now, the rivalry between the two films can be called more 'fair': both have gained additional revenue through re-releases.
The next film about the superhero team, Avengers: Doctor Doom, will be released on December 18, 2026.
