At the Tokyo Game Show 2025, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer shared his thoughts on the future of the brand in an interview. He mentioned four series that, according to him, players most want to see return: MechAssault, Crimson Skies, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey. However, the projects have different chances of being revived.
Windows Central analyzed the situation in detail. MechAssault has the most difficult prospects. Microsoft only owns the rights to games in the BattleTech universe, but books, figurines, merchandise, and other content belong to Topps. Old agreements do not take into account modern formats such as cloud gaming, so the brand remains frozen. Microsoft only issues licenses to other studios, which allows games like MechWarrior and the BattleTech strategy to be released.
The fate of Crimson Skies is also unclear, as the rights to the brand may also partially belong to Topps. But High Road to Revenge is available on Xbox Series X|S via backward compatibility, which gives it a better chance of returning.
Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are in a better position. Developer Mistwalker is still active, and the projects themselves are available on new Xbox consoles via backward compatibility. Given the growing popularity of jRPGs and Microsoft's desire to win over the Japanese audience, these two series have the greatest chance of being revived.
