In 007: First Light, players will see the origin story of James Bond and learn how he got the 00 code and agent status. Creative Director Hakan Abrak said in an interview that IO Interactive didn't want to work with an already formed character, so they "would never do a film adaptation."
"We are not interested in spending resources on, for example, making Pierce Brosnan as realistic as possible."
He added that while he respects previous Bond games, including GoldenEye and James Bond 007 Nightfire, it is more important for the studio to leave its mark on the story and the creation process.
Cinematic and narrative director Martin Emborg noted that some external elements of Bond's image quickly become superficial:
"Everyone knows how he drinks, dresses, and what he drives. It quickly loses its meaning. It's not enough to evoke emotions."
The studio will focus on "an original story about the character who becomes James Bond," rather than repeating established elements.
The new game will allow for a deep character development, using existing books and films about Bond. Emborg emphasized:
"Different interpretations of actors give the opportunity to find your own perspective."
In First Light, Bond will be played by Patrick Gibson ("Dexter: Original Sin"), not classic actors like Connery, Brosnan, or Craig.
007: First Light will be released on March 27, 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
