Employees in the Japanese office don't need to worry about their jobs.
Square Enix announced mass layoffs in "almost all divisions" of its Western business during a general staff meeting on Thursday.
During a video conference for staff outside of Japan, including employees in Europe and the United States, company president Takashi Kiryu announced the implementation of a "structural reform of overseas operations" to create a more "compact" and "flexible" business in international markets.
Square Enix will conduct a "fundamental restructuring of the overseas publishing organization," Kiryu noted. Details of the reform will be revealed later, but job cuts have already been confirmed, and remaining employees will be required to spend more time in the office.
As is usually the case with corporate layoffs, exact figures were not announced at the meeting. However, one of the affected employees in Europe told VGC that around 140 people in the London office alone are at risk of being laid off.
This affects employees from IT, marketing, publishing, sales, quality control, business planning, and other departments.
Employees subject to layoffs were notified on November 6.
It was previously reported that Square Enix plans to hand over 70% of the work of the quality control department to artificial intelligence.
