At State of Play Japan, Sony presented a regional version of the PS5 Digital Edition exclusively for Japan and entirely in Japanese. It will be released on November 21st and priced at approximately $350, which is $130 cheaper than the standard version in the country. Journalist Kawamura Meiku, writing for Yahoo Japan, called this move "perfectly calculated, if not frightening."
The "cheap version only for Japan" method is reminiscent of Nintendo's strategy with the Switch 2, which proved successful, and puts the PS5 in roughly the same price category as the new Nintendo console ($320). Kawamura Meiku suggests that SIE is targeting the "demand caused by the shortage" of the Switch 2, which is not yet widely available in most regions of the country.
By exploiting the niche with a more affordable PS5, the journalist believes that Sony wants to "ignite the console race in Japan for the first time in a long time." In recent years, PS5 sales in Japan have been modest (7 million units), and the console has mainly competed on the basis of technical specifications and a premium price.
Now, with a competitive price and high performance, the PS5 may attract buyers, especially while the Switch 2 remains difficult to obtain. Kawamura Meiku believes that Sony's announcement was made at the perfect moment.
