Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios is working on the next Virtua Fighter. Producer Riichiro Yamada revealed in an interview the studio's goals: the project should become a nominee for "Game of the Year" and be accessible to the maximum number of players.
Of course, our goal is to make a game worthy of a “Game of the Year” nomination. Like the first Virtua Fighter, we want to create a project that doesn't just fit into the “fighting game” genre.
He emphasized that the fighting game genre is often considered niche, but Virtua Fighter is easy to learn, and this is its strength.
Yamada also noted that new mechanics may be added and old ones removed to achieve this:
If you just pile on features, the game will become too complex. Therefore, the new Virtua Fighter needs to experiment by removing some features and introducing new ones.
Among the innovations is the "Rise" mode, which, according to Yamada, will offer "dynamic opportunities to change the pace."
The game is being developed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The release date has not yet been announced.
