Call of Duty Creator and Battlefield Franchise Head Vince Zampella Dies in Car Crash
The causes of the accident are still under investigation. The California State Police are continuing their investigation.
Video game developer Vince Zampella has died in a car accident in the San Gabriel Mountains, Southern California. This was reported by NBC4 Investigates.
The accident occurred on December 21 at 12:45 p.m. local time on Angeles Crest Highway north of Los Angeles. A vehicle traveling southbound went off the road, crashed into a concrete barrier, and the passenger was ejected from the car. Zampella was trapped inside the burning vehicle. Both people died: Zampella died at the scene, and the passenger died in the hospital. Information about the passenger's identity has not been disclosed.
55-year-old Vince Zampella was one of the most influential figures in the video game industry. He was the co-founder and head of Respawn Entertainment, which was founded in 2010. The studio became famous for such hits as Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order. In 2017, Respawn was acquired by Electronic Arts.
Previously, Zampella headed Infinity Ward, where, together with Jason West, he created the Call of Duty franchise, one of the most successful and best-selling series in the history of video games. After leaving Infinity Ward, he also led the EA team in Playa Vista, which worked on the Battlefield series.
