Baldur's Gate 3 influenced the finale of "Stranger Things" - an unexpected source of inspiration
The creators of the series confirmed that the finale of the story was influenced by Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios - Matt Duffer actively played it while working on the script.
In an interview with Variety, the Duffer brothers said that they relied on Baldur's Gate 3 when developing key ideas. According to them, Matt Duffer spent a lot of time in this RPG while writing the script.
We were thinking about D&D, and I was playing Baldur's Gate 3 at the time, and we decided that the only way to defeat evil was to act as a team.
He also noted that by the finale, each character had to approach "ready", having dealt with internal conflicts and accepting themselves:
Each character is fully formed - through self-acceptance or resolution of their conflicts - and enters the final battle as a completely cohesive group. Everyone has their own skills, and this directly refers back to Dungeons & Dragons and games like Baldur's Gate.
The similarity is also noticeable on the screen: the finale of "Stranger Things" resembles a classic team battle with a final threat, familiar to fans of Baldur's Gate 3 and other RPGs. It seems that the influence of the game is already going beyond the gaming industry.
