CDPR Removes Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod - Developer Blames Company for Launching "Punishment" by Piracy
The adventures of developer LukeRoss continue. The DMCA strike has caused a wave of piracy.
Recently, CD Projekt RED's lawyers finally paid attention to LukeRoss's project. The developer was distributing a mod among Patreon subscribers that allowed them to play Cyberpunk 2077 in VR.
CDPR offered to make the modification free, but LukeRoss didn't. And now he has started complaining about the wave of piracy that was provoked by the situation with the DMCA strike (for copyright infringement).
LukeRoss did not rule out the possibility of releasing the mod for free for everyone, but not right now:
[...] it will take time, because my software supports more than 40 games and many completely different engines. Creating a separate version that only works with Cyberpunk 2077 is not a trivial task. In addition, people who voluntarily supported me with money so that I could develop this framework are unlikely to be happy if the mod suddenly becomes free for everyone just because I was forced to do so by pressure
However, he noted that there is no point in doing so anymore — his modification is being actively pirated, fearing losing access:
However, now it doesn't matter that much, because after the unexpected DMCA strike, when the mod was forcibly removed from my Patreon, people, fearing losing VR support for their favorite games, started pirating and illegally distributing the mod all over the Internet. They openly state that since I allegedly violated CDPR's rules, my work can be freely stolen and thus "punish" me. So, in fact, CDPR has already achieved what they wanted.
