Director Zack Cregger revealed which Resident Evil games influenced his new "Resident Evil." Although the film takes place parallel to the events of Resident Evil 2, the main source of inspiration for the director was Resident Evil 4. According to Cregger, it is his favorite installment in the series, in which he spent the most time.

The director noted that the film reflects healing items, weapon progression, and resource management from Resident Evil 4. He did not disclose specific details but emphasized that the film will pay homage to the games.
