Creators of "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" were inspired by Todd Phillips' "Joker"
A new adventure in Middle-earth will show Smeagol's story through his inner world.
Peter Jackson revealed that Todd Phillips' "Joker" starring Joaquin Phoenix was one of the inspirations for "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum".
"We thought about the movie 'Joker,' starring Joaquin Phoenix. About how it explored Joker's psychology while the story developed. We have a story from [Tolkien's] appendices, and we will tell it, but from Gollum's perspective."
Jackson is producing the project, and Andy Serkis will direct. According to the producer, Serkis is best suited for a film about Gollum because he has lived with the character as an actor for decades and understands him from the inside.
"You take Tolkien's texts and film them from a certain perspective, which means in 'The Hunt for Gollum' you have to get inside his head. I don't particularly want to get inside Gollum's head. Andy Serkis will handle that himself."

The events of "The Hunt for Gollum" will unfold between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring," when Gandalf tasks Aragorn with finding Gollum.
Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will return to their roles. Gollum will again be played by Andy Serkis, and a young Aragorn will be played by Jamie Dornan, replacing Viggo Mortensen.
The premiere of "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
