Bungie seriously considered relaunching Destiny 2 under the new title Destiny Infinity instead of creating a full-fledged third installment in the series. According to Forbes, discussions about the franchise's future began after the failure of the Edge of Fate and Renegades expansions in 2025, which did not meet Sony's financial expectations and led to a sharp decline in audience.
To regain player interest and save on the development of a full Destiny 3, the developers planned to abandon the current content release model and relaunch the shooter under the Destiny Infinity banner, focusing on one major annual expansion.
The plan for a large-scale relaunch was scrapped for the same financial reasons: management deemed the idea too expensive to implement. Amidst this news, a fan petition demanding the production of a third installment has already gathered over 285,000 signatures, but industry insiders are confident that it has little chance of changing the studio's decision.
Last week, Bungie officially announced the discontinuation of support for Destiny 2. The final content update will be released on June 9, after which the studio will focus on supporting the extraction shooter Marathon.
